Why I built this

Back Your TeamSan Diego, October 2026

Hey!

I'm J-E. A while back, I was helping out a water polo club here in San Diego and ended up building them a website.

While I was doing that, I started looking into what all these sports club platforms charge. Most have a monthly fee, and then they take a percentage of every payment on top of it. Which seemed pretty ridiculous to me.

So I started looking for another way and came across Zeffy. Getting it to work for memberships was a bit of a headache, but I figured it out. And just like that, the club wasn't losing a chunk of its money to processing fees.

That got me thinking. Why couldn't I do this for other clubs? Build them a great website, give them the tools they need to run things, and just charge a small, flat monthly fee.

So that's what I did. I built Back Your Team.

The idea is pretty simple. A lot of clubs don't have the budget or technical know-how to build something like this themselves. I wanted to make that accessible.

And look, I also want to build a successful business. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But I think there's a way to do both. Help clubs keep more of their money while building something that's sustainable for me too.

That's the whole idea behind Back Your Team.

Thanks,

How we make money

Two ways. Your flat monthly subscription, and 20% of any sponsorship we bring in for your club. What families pay goes straight to your Zeffy form, and we never take a cut of that.

Our bets

We help clubs keep what they raise, with one flat price and no games.

That's a bet, not a fact. Here's what we're betting on, and the numbers we're using to check ourselves. Everything with a price on it links to the page it came from.

Clubs will switch to save money for their team.

When a provider's fees come out of what a team raised, people notice. We bet clubs will move to something cheaper, as long as it's easy.

What one $150 registration costs in processing fees

    Put in your own numbers

Many clubs pay more than they need to.

Here's what we found in the public IRS filings of San Diego youth sports clubs.

    • $1,441median card and merchant fees itemized in a filing (33 filings, average $4,299)
    • $1,154average website and software cost itemized in a filing (42 filings)
    • 123 of 315San Diego clubs in our sample run their site on a general website builder

Source: public IRS Form 990 filings, read through ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer, October 2026. A filing only shows what a club booked as an expense, so fees that families pay and costs a club didn't itemize aren't counted. Only some clubs itemize, so this isn't a random sample. We don't name clubs.

A scenario for a median club

Tell us what you pay today and what you'd change. Most day-to-day questions are handled by AI, and when it needs a person, we step in.

Club budgets are thin, and provider fees take a bigger bite than anyone admits.

Every dollar a club pays a provider is a dollar that doesn't go to the team. These are the prices the providers publish themselves.

We can help teams and causes that haven't been helped before, or that are stuck in payment loops.

Some clubs never got a website. Some can't get paid without a middleman taking a cut of every payment.

Here's how we get around that: families pay your club's own Zeffy form, they type a short payment code, and the code tells us which child it was for. Zeffy is free for registered nonprofits, so the money stays with the club.

We've done this for one water polo club so far. It was hard to set up by hand, which is why we built it into the product.

We help clubs keep what they raise.
